Caught up on “Avatar: The Last Airbender?” Try waterbending for yourself! In this workshop, NextNOW Fest curator Marjorie Antonio ’22 will share her watercoloring tips and tricks as you explore the fantastical fauna of the Four Nations.

Get your scrolls ready for a brief introduction to watercolor techniques and a live demonstration that will flow right through time.

Supply List

  • Pencil / Pen
  • Watercolor Paper / Mixed Media Paper preferred (You can use printer paper or thin paper, but it may wrinkle easily)
  • Watercolor Paints (Either a dry palette or in liquid tubes; Marjorie will be using a dry palette from Koi Watercolours. For liquid watercolours, squeeze just a little bit of the pigment into a palette and mix with water until it reaches your desired opacity. You can also use food colouring, coffee, soy sauce - just make sure to wash your brushes thoroughly afterwards.)
  • Paintbrush (For beginners, Marjorie recommends Round and Flat brushes since they are the most common. If you do not have a paintbrush, you can use a toothbrush, a spare make-up brush, a slice of a cleaning sponge, cotton swabs -- anything that can carry water and pigment.)
  • Reference Photo
  • Paper towel or rag (To clean your brush between colors)

As you enjoy NextNOW SummerFest, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on and acknowledge the Indigenous roots of the land that you’re on. The land on which The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center stands on is the ancestral land of the Piscataway tribe. We encourage you to use a resource like Native-land.ca to learn more. Read about land acknowledgements from the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture
