Opera Scene Study

After a year of deconstructing their craft and sculpting it from the ground up, Maryland Opera Studio first-year students are paired in operatic scenes from a wide variety of repertory. Accompanied only by piano and minimal props, these performances give our young artists a chance to shine in the purest of forms.

UMD Balinese Gamelan Ensemble

The complex interlocking rhythms of Balinese music on percussive instruments, the myriad expressions and the delicate motions of Balinese dance unite in the UMD Gamelan Saraswati.

Spring Chamber Jazz

Swing with the UMD jazz combos as they play both brand-new selections arranged by UMD jazz students and beloved standards. Attend both nights — each performance features a different program.

Spring Big Band Showcase

The UMD jazz ensembles give a lively concert that features jazz standards and premieres of pieces by UMD alumni and current jazz students.

UMD Repertoire Orchestra Concert

Join UMRO for its first concert of 2017 celebrating the vibrancy of music and ballet! Along with favorites by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, UMRO will also perform an excerpt from Crane Whisperer, the 2015 ballet written by co-conductor and composer Dr. Shen Yiwen.

Tchaikovsky - Selections from Swan Lake, Op. 20
Shen Yiwen - Pas de Cinq - Pas de Deux (Before Parting), from Crane Whisperer
Prokofiev - Selections from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64

Opera New Work Reading

An innocent boy, son to a family of goat herders, is found to be heir to the kingdom. Riches and luxury are laid at his feet, but at what cost to others?

This world premiere musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde's “The Young King,” by Martin Hennessy with libretto by Tom Rowan, addresses human rights and social justice issues directly relevant to contemporary wealth and income inequality struggles. Performed by Maryland Opera Studio (MOS) artists.

Company Wang Ramirez: Monchichi

This fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance showcases the beauty of the body as it is manipulated and consumed. A couple on and off stage, Sébastien Ramirez is a Frenchman of Spanish descent who grew up steeped in hip-hop culture; Honji Wang is a classically trained German ballerina of Korean descent. In Monchichi, their contrasting backgrounds and aesthetics explosively meet in a performance that confronts identity, love and the enigma of culture.
