Program Notes:

School of Music bassoonist Eddie Rumzis solos with the UMD Repertoire Orchestra on their first concert of the season, performing Weber's Andante and Rondo Ungarese.

The Tibetan Buddhist concept of a “rainbow body” – when an enlightened being physically dies, his or her body is absorbed back into the universe as energy or light – is realized through a spectrum of timbres and joyful energy in Christopher Theofanidis’s tone poem Rainbow Body. UMRO also performs selections from Bizet's two L'Arlesienne suites, which feature some of the composer's most songful and majestic orchestral writing.

Program

  • THEOFANIDIS: Rainbow Body
  • WEBER: Andante and Rondo Ungarese, featuring Eddie Rumzis, bassoon
  • WAGNER: Overture to Rienzi
  • BIZET: L'Arlesienne Suite Nos. 1 and 2
